St. Mary's Casino Night event will take place on November 8th. We will need to decide as a class what project we want to create and use for the silent auction. Last year, your students (3rd grade class) raised the most money for the auction with a Cowboy themed basket. Please email me with your ideas for this fundraising event.
Here is what they will be learning this week.
Religion: Students are learning about God and our Conscience. They will identify how God works within our conscience to live a virtuous life. Students are required to complete 3 hours of community service each 9 weeks. A grade will be taken in religion for this required participation. They will be given a community service sheet that should be completed and signed by a parent or another adult. On the back of this sheet they must explain what they learned from this work experience.
Math: We will begin the week taking the last of the NWEA Map tests in math on Monday. Tuesday students will begin chapter 3 on multiples and factors. Timed multiplication drills will be given on Wednesday and Friday. Students who have shown mastery of multiplication facts have been exempt from these drills. Please have your students practice multiplication facts each night so they are memorized. They will have homework on Tuesday and Wednesday this week in their Dimensions workbook.
Language Arts & Reading: Students are reading short stories to identify main idea, theme and vocabulary usage. They will apply literary techniques to identify rhyme scheme and author's purpose to poetry. They will begin using their English Journals to make daily writing entries about specific topics given. They will be given a 20 word spelling test on Friday. Please have them practice their words each night. These words are found inside their planner under the corresponding calendar week.
Students are required to read 20 minutes each night and take the AR tests online at school upon completion of each book read. A 9 weeks participation grade is taken for each student.
Science: Students are learning about density and why some objects float and other don't. They will begin to use their interactive notebooks to create vocabulary, design scientific investigations, and learn that science and engineering are ongoing processes.
History: Students will have a history test on Chapter 4 on Monday. They will begin learning about "King Henry VIII." from "Stories of Civilization" and be given a study guide for comprehension and understanding on Tuesday. They will be given a test over the chapter on Friday.
I welcome your communication with me, and want you to take any opportunity to set conference times or email. My teacher conference times this year are Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 1:20-2:20. I can certainly accommodate an after school conference when necessary due to conflicting work schedules.
Thank you for giving me the blessing of your children in our classroom this school year.
